A Visit from Farmer Mark

It’s been quite a rainy few weeks here in Washtenaw County, including seeing some really big storms come through.  I was wondering how our local farmers were feeling about the rain, so when Farmer Mark from Seeley Farm stopped by the kitchen to deliver salad greens, I asked him! Mark told me that having so much rain is a big challenge for the farm.  When the fields are so wet, he can’t plant new crops or work the soil.  He said that he usually plants a new crop of salad greens every Thursday–he said he’s been lucky so far this summer that the weather and other factors have allowed him to plant regularly each week.  This week, however, he was making deliveries on Thursday because the fields were too wet for planting.  He wasn’t sure when he’d be able to plant.  It’s important not to work the soil while it’s wet because it can get compacted and lose all the air.  Mark warned me that this missed planting might mean that there’s a shortage of salad greens in a few weeks, but on the other hand, things might grow more quickly depending (as always) on the weather.  As Mark himself said, “You never know!”  He said generally the crops love the rain, but TOO much rain can be a problem if the fields flood or crops get washed away.  Here’s hoping that the weather will be more moderate in the next few weeks!
