Spinach Salad = the essence of spring!

You can certainly tell that the seasons are changing here in Southeast Michigan this week–we’ve had a couple of scorching hot days followed by a chilly weekend.  It’s been a bit of a roller coaster–as the saying goes, if you don’t like the weather in Michigan, wait 5 minutes!

The big question for us local foodies, though, is how are our local farms handling the crazy weather shifts?  Well, big picture, climate change and the weather changes that brings is becoming a noticeable factor in our growing season.  However, weeks like this one with hot days followed by cold days are actually a pretty normal aspect of spring in the upper midwest and the crops (and farmers) can handle it.  Weather changes are part of the changing seasons and they’re to be expected.  For much of April and May we had cool rainy weather, which was fabulous for the spinach–encouraging luscious leaves and sweet flavor.  However, hot days like we had this week causes the spinach to blossom (aka bolting), which signals the end of the spinach season as the leaves loose sweetness and the stems become woody.  Don’t mourn too much, though–the end of the spinach means the start of other nice things to come as the season shifts to late spring/early summer!
